This is a great debut for Ms. Fields. She has characters that are believable and even the supporting issues and characters are three-dimensional. I feel like any one of them could have been an interesting side-trip. The thing that struck me most, though, is her voice. Her pace has some "air" in it. That makes it feel more southwest, as if the 100-degree days require a stop and a sip while telling the tale.I look forward to her next book, whether set within Artemis and her current cast or elsewhere.

Good mystery that kept me guessing to the end. Descriptive and accurate portrayal of life on the Texas-Mexico border. Slow start for me but developed into a good mystery plot with a tense and exciting climax. Solving the final mystery was a bit anticlimactic for me but still a surprise nonetheless.
This author develops very real characters and brings out their human frailties well. Her descriptions of the violence wreaked by the Mexican cartels was almost too soft.
I found this book a little disjointed for the first 1/2.
There was a lot of background information that didn't seem to fit together.
By the 2nd 1/2 the story flowed much easier. Overall a good book.
Artemis, Texas is in "The Territory," the stretch of land that borders Mexico and, as this book begins, has been chosen by two warring drug cartels as a route for their drug traffic into the U.S. Josie Gray, chief of Artemis, is charged with keeping her town safe while being out manned and out gunned by the drug lords.
In addition to engaging action scenes, author Tricia Fields creates a cast of characters that beg to be revisited in a continuing series.
This mystery has been new territory for me. Another wonderful author to read, another trip into the desert that I love. A picture in this reader's mind that promises more good reads in the future. You can bet I will search for more of these author's work.
"The Territory' is a great read and a promising debut for a planned series of Josie Gray novels. It's well-written and the setting and primary subject matter are unique. I felt like I was out there sweating in the desert while reading it! Loved the Josie Gray character and the others are well-drawn as well. The storyline had me hooked and I had a hard time putting the down. I plan to follow up with "Scratchgravel Road" and hope I enjoy it as much.
This is a very good story telling about the war on the US and Mexico border. This is a wild west Territory where the bad guys (drug dealers and cartels) have so much money and power it seems impossible that local small town police can present any opposition. This novel tells of Chief Josie Gray who is challenged not only by overwhelming forces from the drug cartels.. but from local, state, and federal bureaucracies which when not limited by finance are severely limited by leadership. This novel tells of the struggle on a very personal level and is well written.
